Who is this for?

For PE teachers who are tired of second-guessing.

You might know the feeling of:

  • Uncertainty. "What am I actually supposed to assess and grade?"
  • Overwhelm. "How can I assess 30 students while teaching?"
  • Doubt. "Am I gathering the right information?"
  • Frustration. "How can I assess without sacrificing activity time?"

Sound familiar? Then you're in the right place. It doesn't matter if you're starting from scratch or already have systems that mostly work. The PE Assessment Blueprint meets you where you are and builds from there.

Why I built this

I'm a PE teacher too.

I've felt the real-world challenges. Large class sizes. Uncertain what's worth assessing. Frustration trying to assess without losing focus or activity time. Questioning if the report card grade even makes sense or means anything.

But I didn't stay in this spot.

I dove into assessment and grading to understand what really helps and what makes the biggest difference for learning. Through years of challenges, successes, and changes, I reshaped how I teach and what my students experience. And I've had the chance to help many other PE teachers do the same, as an educator, a leader, and an assessment associate with Solution Tree and the Canadian Assessment Centre.

That's why I built the Blueprint: to share what's worked, and what's working, for PE teachers who want assessment and grading to feel less like a guessing game and more like a meaningful part of their teaching.

"I came for the resources, but I gained so much more. This membership helped me make sense of assessment and gave me tools and strategies I actually use in my PE classes. Coming back to teaching PE, it's given me and my students a new spark of energy. I feel more confident and focused than before, and it hasn't meant spending more time planning."

— Toney Swatford, High School PE Teacher, Montreal

Have you ever wondered...

  • What am I trying to assess in this unit?
  • Am I assessing what students are actually learning?
  • How can I give feedback that students will actually use?
  • Grades feel arbitrary. What do they even mean?

Or other questions like these? You're not alone. These are the types of questions I've heard from PE teachers for years, and they're exactly what the PE Assessment Blueprint works through, across five themes:

  1. Clarifying What to Teach and AssessKnowing what you're teaching and what to assess
  2. Designing Aligned Learning Experiences Designing lessons so evidence of learning is easier to see
  3. Designing Assessment Tools and ApproachesUsing practical assessment tools and approaches
  4. Using Assessment in PE ClassGathering and using assessment information while students are active
  5. Communicating Student LearningCreating meaningful grades that reflect student learning

It's not a course you race to finish.

"I've attended, and delivered, many PD sessions over the years, but the PE Assessment Blueprint is hands-down among the most valuable professional learning I've been part of. Josh breaks down assessment and grading in clear, meaningful ways, backed by real classroom examples and a deep understanding of what teachers actually face day-to-day. I keep coming away with concrete tools and strategies I can apply immediately.."

— Jake Bersin, Elementary PE Teacher, Massachusetts
