3 Ways Assessment Can Fuel Motivation in PE

Many think of assessment and motivation in PE as loosely connected or not connected at all. One feels like grading, the other feels like getting kids moving. In reality, assessment plays a central role in motivating students, shaping how they see themselves as movers and learners.

Assessment in PE is more than recording scores or assigning grades. And motivation is more than getting kids to engage. It is about creating the conditions where students feel connected to the class and empowered to influence their own experiences. Assessment provides students with clarity on their strengths and areas for growth, helps them recognize progress, and positions them as active participants in their learning. When approached thoughtfully, assessment can directly boost student motivation, engagement, and confidence in PE.

Here are three ways that assessment and motivation are interdependent and supportive of each other:

Progress Fuels Drive

People naturally want to see and feel that progress is real. Assessment lets students see and feel this in real time, and when used with them, it can become a powerful motivator.

Clarity Builds Belief

When students know what they are doing and what is being looked for, they can more effectively recognize their strengths, identify areas for growth, and follow a path toward success. Together, this helps students believe that success is possible and taps into their sense of competence, a key driver of internal motivation.

Feedback Affirms Effort

Feedback acts as a communication bridge between the PE teacher and student, helping to show how learning is progressing and what comes next. Providing timely, actionable feedback while learning is happening is one of the most powerful ways to support student growth and build positive connections. Feedback not only affirms students’ current efforts but also helps them understand when adjustments are needed to continue improving.
